Ephedra/Ephedrine – facts and myths

Fact #1

Ephedra (Ma Huang) is an herbal ingredient that was
used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It
was originally used as treatment for nasal
decongestion and low energy. It has also been found to
have great fat burning abilities, which has led to its
wide spread use in dietary supplements. Dietary
supplements containing Ephedra include ephedrine
alkaloids, which are complex combinations of nitrogen
and oxygen.

With the rise in obesity levels amongst most
industrial nations, the adverse health effects
associated with being overweight have become
apparent. The use of Ephedra products for fat
lose has also increased amongst Americians.
Based on surveys conducted in 1999, between
12 and 17 million Americans consumed
ephedra based products.

Numerous studies have been preformed that show
that when consumed according to manufacturers
recommendations, ephedra is safe and efective. The
key is to use the products as directed.

Most of the horror stories that people have heard
about come from a small number of adverse event
reports. These reports are not scientific in nature
and are usually the result of an individual
consuming high concntrations, sometime 2 to 3
times the recommended amount.A consertative

For years, Ephedra manufacturers have urged
the Food and Drug Administration to mandate
consumer labeling and manufacturing
safeguards to reduce the risk of consumer

confusion and doubt about Ephedra products.

Myth #1 Ephedrine/Ephedra is Not Safe
Ephedra is safe and effective when used as directed.

Myth #2 Ephedrine
is only used for bodybuilders and not
widely used by the general public.
While the bodybuilding community has used
ephedra to increase energy levels and increase
fat loss. Millions of everyday people are
consuming ephedra based products as part of a

Myth #3 Is Ephedrine and
phenylpropanolamine the same?
No. Phenypropanolamine is a psychoactive drug of the
phenethylamine and amphetamine chemical classes
which is used as a stimulant, decongestant, and
anorectic agent. Phenypropanolamine has been linked
to stroke in women. Ephedra does not contain
phenypropanolamine.
